In Exodus 23:14&16, God gave the following commandment to His people; “Celebrate the Festival of Harvest with the firstfruits of the crops you sow in your field” (Exodus 23:16). At this festival, the Israelites were to offer the firstfruits (the first and ripe/best) of the late spring harvest to God (Numbers 28:26 and Exodus 34:22).

As Jesus comes (not to abolish the law but to fulfil it – Mark 5:17) in the New Testament, we see the commandment of the Firstfruits Festival begin to transition to a principle we can still apply today.

In Luke 10:12 and John 4:35-36, Jesus draws attention to a spiritual harvest (a world of people waiting and ready to receive God). Paul calls Jesus the “firstfruit” offering (the first and the best) of this harvest (1 Corinthians 15: 20-22).

Because of Jesus’ ‘firstfruit’ offering we as the whole harvest, are made holy and blessed (Romans 11:16) Like so much of the Old Testament, though we are no longer bound by law, observing the principles of God brings great blessing.

Just like the principle of the Sabbath – a day of Rest, Reflection and Relationship – the principle of Firstfruits – giving God our first and best – will bring great blessing to all our lives when we observe it with a cheerful heart.
